Hey, it’s Alex here and today I am going to talk about Rank Math vs Yoast Seo plugin.
As you know, there are countless plugins for improving your WordPress SEO statistics. They usually promise to skyrocket your site in search results of Google. The most popular seo plugins are Yoast and Rank Math. But we can also add All in One SEO pack here.
Yoast SEO is at the most downloadable with 5+ million installations since its launch but Rank Math is now gaining popularity.
So, if you really want to help your SEO and make it a bit easier to rank, then these plugins have everything you need. In this article I am giving Rank Math review and Yoast SEO review.
Yoast SEO: The Initial WordPress SEO Plugin
This plugin got the name WP SEO when the public saw it for the first time in 2010. It can somehow explain why it has been the most popular among other SEO plugins for many years. It was developed by Joost de Valk who was very interested in WordPress and made a lot of small SEO plugins for WP. Later he combined them all in one and called it Yoast.
This plugin is popular among millions of users all over the world and employs people in different countries with estimated revenue of $12 million per year.
Rank Math: New Player on the Horizon
Rank Math started its journey in 2018 in New Delhi, India. For three years there have been 700,000+ downloads, so the plugin is becoming quite popular among bloggers.
Though it’s not the most popular one, actually the third one after Yoast and All In One SEO Pack, it has 5 star reviews and is developing really fast with a lot of valuable features added every month.
Why has it become so popular? In my opinion thanks to its free features which are usually premium in other plugins. Surely, it has a Pro version but the free one is also great for ordinary users.
Rank Math vs Yoast SEO
It is really easy to install both Rank Math and Yoast SEO. They have step-by-step instructions which help you automatically customize you SEO parameters.
As for me, it was much easier to customize Rank Math as everything was done for me automatically. But still here is a short guide how to do it.
How To Install Yoast
You can find the Yoast SEO Configuration Guide on your WordPress dashboard. You will find here an explanation about the main features and how this plugin works.
There are 8 steps in setting up Yoast and there is also a video guide which is quite handy especially if you are a beginner.
While configuring Yoast SEO, you are able to switch off such parameters as:
- Readability analysis
- Text-link counter
- XML sitemaps
- Admin bar menu
Each of these features is explained, so you know what you do.
As to Rank Math setup, you can choose a simple mode or an advanced one. As for me, I usually choose the simple mode for my sites as Rank Math uses all the necessary features. For more editing options you can connect the plugin to your Rank Math account. It’s, of course, optional.
The good thing about Rank Math is that you can connect it to your Google Analytics and get a lot of insights into the performance of your site.
By the way, if you want to transfer your site form Yoast to Rank Math, Rank Math will do it automatically without losing any settings you already have in Yoast.
So, both plugins Rank Math and Yoast SEO are quite easy to set up even if you are a complete beginner.
Rank Math vs Yoast SEO – Optimizing Keywords
The most important part of SEO is the use of right keywords. But sometimes it’s very difficult to properly optimize your text for keywords. Luckily, SEO plugins come into play. So, how do they help optimize and analyze your keywords?
My choice here is of course Rank Math as it allows to track 5 keywords for free unlike Yoast with just 1 keyword in with the free version. Here are some details about the keyword module of both plugins.
With the free version you can analyze just one keyword (if you want more, you’ll have to get Premium). When writing an article just enter your focus keyword in a special field. You will see how good your article is optimized for this keyword. You’ll also get a list of suggestions how to improve it. You will see your SEO score on the traffic light bar from red to green.
Rank Math is what I use and like it very much. It gives more a detailed analysis of your keywords compared with the free version of Yoast. Just enter your primary keywords in a special field and you will get your score from 0 to 100. If your text is well optimized, the color is going to be green (80 points and more). Besides, you will get suggestions on how to improve this score up to 100.
I like this feature of Rank Math more because it has a more intuitive interface and I can immediately see how well my article is SEO optimized.
Rank Math vs Yoast SEO – Free Features
There are a lot of free features that come with Rank Math unlike the Yoast SEO (it has less free options). The thing is if an average blogger benefit much from all these free features? Below you can see some of free and premium features of both plugins. Of course, there are much more of them, just click the image to find out.
You can find the following list of free features in both plugins:
- SEO templates – create examples of titles and descriptions for your future articles
- XML sitemap and sitewide schema markup
- Social media descriptions – for Facebook and Twitter
- Breadcrumbs – to make site navigation easier
- Search Console – you can connect your site to Google Search Console
- Counter for internal links
- Adding descriptors and titles for simple WooCommerce SEO
Free Features of Rank Math
There are more free options to help optimize your site for better SEO in Rank Math. Here is the list of them:
- Ability to integrate it with Google Analytics
- 5 free keywords for the analysis
- Local SEO and Image SEO
- 404 Error Manager
- Recommendations to internal links when you write an article
- Redirect manager
- Counter for external links
What I like most about these free options is that you can automatically send your article for indexing to Bing and Google when you publish or edit content.
Here is my guide on how to do it both for Google and Bing.
Rank Math vs Yoast SEO – Premium
The advantage of Rank Math is that it offers some of Yoast premium features for free. For example, the following features are included in the Yoast Premium but in Rank Math they are free:
- redirect manager
- internal link suggestions
- multiple keyword analysis
But in general premium version of both plugins are quite different products.
Premium add-ons include:
- Local SEO – multiple locations
- Video SEO – get your videos listed in Google Videos
- News SEO – make your site more friendly for Google News
- more complex WooCommerce SEO
With Rank Math Premium you can analyze how successful your keywords are for one full year. Besides, you get more advanced integrations with different Google services like Google Trends and so on. With every update, the plugin becomes increasingly better.
Rank Math vs Yoast SEO – Friendliness
You can edit SEO parameters from a special meta box when you write your article. There is also a special sidebar for this. The meta box is compatible both with WordPress classic and block editors but the sidebar is included only in the block editor.
There are for positions in the meta box. They are SEO, Readability, Schema, and Social.
I use Yoast on one of my websites and I usually edit SEO using the meta box. It goes right after the article so it’s more convenient for me rather than using the sidebar option.
This plugin completely compatible with the block version of WordPress, so there is no need for a meta box option.
When creating or editing your content you will see the Rank Math icon in the toolbar at the top. Just click it and it’ll open.
There are also 4 options: General, Advanced, Schema, and Social.
Yoast SEO vs Rank Math – Price
Previously Rank Math was completely free but not so long ago a paid version was launched. There two options Pro and Business. But still the free version has everything to succeed with your SEO and even features that are part of Yoast paid version.
Here is what you will find in premium versions of Yoast SEO or Rank Math if you decide to purchase them.
The paid package of this plugin is going to cost $89 for one site per year. If you buy it for multiple sites, you can get some discounts: 5% for an additional site with the license of more than 10 sites.
As for such options as Video SEO, Local SEO, WooCommerce SEO, and News SEO, they go as different plugins. Each of them costs $69. So, even here Rank Math is much more attractive.
Rank Math has 2 paid options: Pro ($59/year) and Business ($199/year). These prices go as special offers, and available for a limited time.
Here are the main differences between these two packages:
- Keywords tracking – 500 for Pro and 10,000 for Business
- Unlimited personal websites for Pro
- Additional support for client websites with Business
- 24/7 support for both versions and priority support for Pro
Yoast SEO vs Rank Math – Which Is the Winner?
Now I will try to make my decision on what plugin wins this competition taking into account several parameters.
Yoast SEO is one of the oldest plugins and has the most downloads among other WordPress SEO plugins. As for Rank Math, it has shown great growth of more than 700,000 downloads for 3 years. So, it is definitely a great competitor for Yoast.
Now I’ll try to decide the winner in each of these categories. It’s just my personal opinion.
- Setting-up – I like Rank Math more with its automatic set-up wizard which automatically customizes all necessary SEO parameters with optimal options. Besides, it has an option to transfer Yoast settings.
- Keywords – even with the free version of Rank Math you can track 5 keywords and see a more detailed SEO analysis of your article (0-100 score) unlike the Yoast (1 keyword and red-orange-green score for optimization). So, Rank Math is the winner here.
- Features – there is a huge list of free options in Rank Math which is larger than Yoast has to offer. They even include some of Yoast premium ones.
- User-Friendliness – it depends on a user’s likings. Maybe there are a bit more options in Yoast as it has a meta box and sidebar options.
- Pricing – Rank Math is cheaper and the best part is that it includes an unlimited sites option. All the features are included for just one price, unlike Yoast which divides premium options into different add-ons which are quite expensive.
So, my decision is RANK MATH IS THE WINNER
As of right now, I use it on almost all of my sites and really satisfied with how it works. It gives me a clear view of how good is my content from SEO perspective. I advise you to give it a try as it’s updated on a regular basis with a lot of great features.
