Hey. Welcome to my Doodly review – best doodle software for creating doodle videos. Today, I am going to take a look at the updated version of Doodly.
If you are actively using different social networks like Facebook, you might saw a lot of interesting videos in which a person holds a pen and draws various animated characters on the screen, puts them in different parts of the video, and even writes a text.
So, such types of videos are called doodle videos. They are great as people pay attention to such unusual videos. To make them a special whiteboard software is used. And as you can understand, Doodle is one of it.
So, in today’s Doodly review you’ll learn more about features, advantages and disadvantages, and pricing.
Whiteboard Animation Videos
Whiteboard animation videos have become really popular over the last few years. Doodle videos increase conversions as they appeal to viewers, attract their attention, and pleasurable to see. With such type of videos you can explain your ideas in a more vivid form than with just by drawing on a piece of paper with a pen.
Doodly Review: What Is It?
Doodly is a program that you download to your computer with which it’s really easy to create whiteboard animation videos. To my mind, it is one of the best whiteboard animation software available. You’ve probably already seen the animation on the whiteboard. It’s when a person or a hand is writing a text or drawing an image while the text is spoken. Whiteboard animation is used for a variety of purposes, such as educational purposes and internet marketing. They hold the viewer’s attention very well.

To add a voice-over, you’ll have to import an MP3 file from an external source.

Usually, it’s quite difficult to edit a video to make it look good. So, many people look for easy-to-use software. Luckily, Doodly is one of them. You can customize here the timeline, deleting scenes, duplicating scenes, and so on. You can also edit the length of each stage that you sketch.

If you want other people to see your doodle animation, you can share them from the software itself. Before sharing you can choose what things to share, i.g. the frame rate, quality, and resolution. When everything is ready, just hit “share” button. Doodly allows to send to different social platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. If you have a website, there is also such an option.
- Board Styles
Continuing Doodly review I want to stress that Doodly is primarily used for creating a whiteboard animated videos, there are also different some color board styles. They comprise:
- Custom board
In the Custom board style you have an opportunity to create your own background color and choose what the arm will use – chalk or marker.

Lastly, there is a great feature which is the request function. Using it, you can request the team to add necessary features in the future updates.
Doodly Review: Pricing
There are two plans: Standard and Enterprise.
You can pay monthly or annually. Of course, the annual plan can save you a lot.
- Standard plan is $20/month (billed annually) or $39/month (billed monthly)
- Enterprise is $40/month (billed annually) or $69/month (billed monthly)
With the monthly plan you can cancel the subscription at any time, but it costs more if compared with the annual option.
If you pay annually for 12 months you can save more money, around $228 for the Standard plan and $349 for the Enterprise plan.
There are several upgrades for this software. If you want to create colorful doodle videos you will have to purchase Doodly rainbow upgrade for $67 one-time payment. You will have in total 16,000 characters.
Who Can Use Doodly Doodle Maker
This software can be used by anyone for various purposes. For example,
- For promoting affiliate products or your own ones
- For making explanatory videos
- For uploading to different social platforms
- For making training or educational videos, etc.
Does Doodly Have A Free Trial
Unfortunately, Doodly doesn’t offer and free trials. But you are covered with a 30-day money-back guarantee if you want to buy it. So, if for some reason you don’t like the software, you can get your money back.
Continuing my Doodly review, it is necessary to mention why it is a good idea to get the software.
1. Even complete beginners will be able to create whiteboard videos very quickly.
You can understand how to use Doodly even without a tutorial. The intuitive interface allows you to start creating videos right away/
2. Extensive doodle library.
If you are not good at drawing, there is a great library to choose images from. It allows you easily create stunning videos.
3. You get a commercial license.
One of the best things is that you can create doodle videos and sell them. So, this way you can start making money.
This wouldn’t be a Doodly review if I don’t mention some disadvantages of the software.
1. No color animations in the Standard version.
If you want to create colorful drawings, it’s necessary to buy Doodly Rainbow add-on for one-time price of $67. They charge it to cover the creation of the feature. Quite fair but still it’s more money out of pocket.
However, it’s OK with me as I create mainly whiteboard videos with black and white colors. They also look great.
But there is a way to solve the problem. You can upload your own color images into the software and use the Path feature.
2. Works only with the Internet connection.
You must be connected to the Internet to use Doodly. Surely, today it’s not a big deal. But if you are out of town and there is no internet connection, you won’t be able to continue your work.
Doodly Review: conclusion
I hope you found my Doodly review helpful. Now you know the pricing policy, how everything works. So, if you are looking for a doodle animation program that is easy to use, Doodly is the best option.
Doodly Review: Tutorial
Sign in to your Doodly account and go to the top and create a new video. In addition to a whiteboard background, you can choose a chalkboard background that comes in a black or an old-school; green chalkboard, or a custom background where you can put any color or upload your own image. There’s also a glass board feature, so it’s almost like you’re on the other side of a glass pane and someone’s writing on the glass. It’s a really modern look.
Here you can also change the dimensions, e.g. to 1080p. Hit create and you will see Doodly interface. On the left, you have all of your assets that come pre-programmed into Doodly. On different tabs you have your characters, scenes, fonts.
There are three fonts that come pre-installed with Doodly, but you can input your own fonts to work within this program, which is really good. If you have tons of fonts and you want to use all the fonts you have, you’re not happy with what comes with Doodly, there are unlimited fonts that you can bring into Doodly, which is really good.
You also have what they call sound. So, there’re tons of royalty-free music tracks that Doodly has licensed for you. We can also import our own.
There is also the marketplace. Click that marketplace button and it brings us to a website where they have bundles of images that you can purchase for your Doodly project and they’re curated.
Moving on with our Doodly review. Now we go to our canvas. It’s the whiteboard option. You can drag and drop characters from the left to the canvas. Here we’re building our frame and we can zoom out, so we can see that these are the dimensions that we chose for our project at the beginning.
On the right is all of your actions. Here you can also determine the timing of your illustration. You can increase this number to delay how soon the character comes on. In the duration tab, you adjust how long it takes to draw on. So you can really time things out, and one of the things I really do like about this is that the increments of the durations are really small. It’s not like one second at a time.
You really can like fine-tune and that’s actually not true with every software I looked at so I really do appreciate this on Doodly.
At the bottom is our timeline. This is like a visual representation of how our video is going to be sequenced together. Here you add in your voiceover music. Here you can see your scenes. You can add new scenes. We can add as many scenes as we want. Here you can see the camera button feature. This is a new feature for Doodly and in my mind, it’s a bit of a game-changer.
A camera in software like this basically means that you can zoom in or zoom out. Pan left or pan right or up or down on any given area of your canvas, and it looks like it’s not like cutting scenes. This happens that one scene goes away and the next thing comes in.
You can go from this scene to that scene and just like zoom in and out. This is something Doodly did not have before and, in my mind, is a huge improvement.
Doodly Review: demo
Ok. Now let’s go and grab one of the scenes from the left. The scenes are pre-designed for you. But all of the elements in these scenes are individuals, so every single one of the chairs is customizable. You can shrink them to make bigger, reposition them or just delete if there’re like too many chairs around the table.
Now you can get a character and customize him. Go under the Settings button and change his opacity, change the way he comes on to the screen. So he neither just be there or you can have him draw on the duration of 3 seconds and then what you can do is you can have him erased.
You can change the duration of how long it takes to erase him as well. Hit apply and preview what you have. You can add a voice-over to the timeline and see the preview with it, how everything changed.
There are also a lot of options for choosing a hand. Go over to the Settings tab, and you can see that there are many different types of hands: women’s hands, men’s hands, more close-ups that you can use to draw on your scenes. You can also do left-handed, which is pretty cool.
Another thing that Doodly has added is the cartoon hand feature. So now there are different cartoon illustrated hands that can draw on your illustration. So, you can go like a full-blown cartoon if you want.
Now let’s look at that glass board. With this feature, your hand will face the camera instead of the other way around.
Another feature that Doodly has added is what’s called custom paths. So, when you have an asset that comes with Doodly, the hand already knows how to draw it in.
But if you bring in your own asset, Doodly just defaults to this like left to right scribble, instead of really drawing something in a really accurate way or realistic way. You know if you were going to draw someone’s face, you might start with their eyes, but Doodly would start with the top left corner of their head.
So, it’s really nice to be able to tell Doodly the way you go to draw something on. So, the path feature allows you to do it. You just upload your own image and create a custom path. Click on your image and hit the pencil tab. On the right, you will see a plus button. Then highlight the area you want the hand to start drawing with. You can play with keyframes and the trick is to get everything in your image. So, this is that custom path feature.
